MBT-based biocides (Methylene bis-thiocyanate, often abbreviated as MBT or MTC) are offered by Innova Corporate as a non-oxidizing, broad-spectrum biocide for Ahmedabad's anaerobic environments and closed systems. MBT is particularly effective against sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB), slime-forming organisms, and some fungi. It is widely used in closed-loop cooling systems, firewater storage tanks, oilfield water injection (for nearby oilfields like Mehsana), and metalworking fluid sumps. For Ahmedabad's industrial facilities, MBT offers the advantage of sustained activity (half-life 5-10 days) and thermal stability up to 60°C – important for systems that experience high temperatures. Unlike glutaraldehyde, MBT has minimal odor and low volatility, making it suitable for indoor applications such as closed-loop chillers located inside manufacturing buildings. For dairy and food processing plants (Ahmedabad has many), MBT is used in pasteurizer cooling water (indirect contact) at 10-25 ppm to prevent biofilms in the cooling circuit. It shows synergy with isothiazolines and DBNPA and can be used in rotation programs. However, MBT is not compatible with oxidizing biocides (chlorine, bromine, chlorine dioxide) and may be deactivated by reducing agents (sulfite, bisulfite). For severe SRB problems that manifest as hydrogen sulfide odor (rotten eggs) and blackened water in Ahmedabad's cooling loops or firewater tanks, we recommend a shock dose of 100-200 ppm MBT for 24-48 hours. This will penetrate slime layers and eliminate SRB colonies deep in pipelines and dead legs. The product has limited algae control – for cooling towers exposed to sunlight, combine with a tertiary algicide (e.g., quaternary ammonium compound). MBT is available as a 20-30% active liquid (diluted in organic solvents or surfactants) and as a solid (98-99% active) for slow-release applications. Storage: MBT may crystallize below 10°C – in Ahmedabad's brief "winter" (Dec-Jan, night temperatures occasionally 8-12°C), we recommend storing drums in a temperature-controlled area or using formulations with anti-crystallization additives. Available in 25L and 200L drums (liquid) and 20kg bags (solid). We provide on-site SRB testing using API RP 38 culture bottles to confirm treatment effectiveness. Shelf life: 12 months (liquid), 24 months (solid).
Dosage in cooling water treatment programs 25 to 45 ppm for effective control of biocide activity, for cooling waters.
INNOVA BCD 501can be fed as received or diluted with water minimum 10% concentration with any chemical feed solution. The chemical should be added to cooling tower basin (or any other point, which provides uniform mixing) addition should be made to metering pump to minimize handling.
Badly fouled systems must be cleaned before treatment to start. INITIAL DOSE - When the system is noticeably fouled, slug feed 25 to 50 ppm of INNOVA BCD 501 in the system. SUBSEQUENT DOSE - When the Microbial count is evident, slug feed 20 to 40 ppm of INNOVA BCD 501.
The best indication of the successful application of INNOVA BCD 501 is visual inspection of tower surfaces or monitoring changes in heat transfer on metal surface of process equipment.
Uses of on-site bacterial counts or microscopic examination provide relative indicators of system cleanliness and biological control. If bacteria counts are used, Note that counts may be high immediately after biocide addition. Counts will be lower as control is achieved.
INNOVA BCD 501 is available in 25Kgs, 50Kgs & 200 Kgs.
